Move Through It

This virtual movement circle is a communal space for LGBTQ+ people to explore themes of grief through movement practice and discussion.

About your facilitator:

Afé Abeni (he/him) is a movement artist and somatic healing practitioner. As an advocate for healing justice and, an out Jamaican Trans and queer person, his involvement in initiatives prioritizing queer and trans well being, is paramount.

With his work he aims to create space for unfiltered expression and the rewriting of stories in our bodies through movement and movement-focused somatic tools. His dedication to innovation and curiosity fuels his artistic pursuits exemplifying a commitment to creative evolution. He finds joy in sharing tools and gems with community especially if they have personally benefitted his own healing and transformation. His approach to health and well-being invites folks on a journey to being unapologetically their body’s kindest occupant transmuting and holding brave space for what we carry there.

About this circle:

  • Prioritizes LGBTQ+ Jamaicans

  • Welcomes grieving LGBTQ+ folks across the Caribbean and its diasporas.

  • Recommends keeping your camera on as much as you can to foster connection in the virtual space.

  • What to bring:

    • A yoga mat.

    • A journal for processing.

    • Comfy, light coloured clothing (darks and black clothing are not recommended for this session)

    • A blanket, pillows/cushions, stim toys, crystals, or other comfort items.

    • Water bottle or have water accessible to hydrate.

    • The elements for grounding (pick what works for you): 

      • earth: (you can be close to a window where you can see a tree/trees) or have a potted plant close by. 

      • water: having cups or a bucket of water around you in a clear bowl or basin with sea salt - water is an amazing container for our emotions and stories, feel free to add sea salt.

      • fire: candles.

      • air: fan or window open, incense.

  • Ideal for LGBTQ+ people who:

    • are facing any kind of grief.

    • want to connect with their bodies and are uncertain about how to start.

    • have difficulty with maintaining a movement practice.

    • want tools to strengthen their emotional capacity.

*Bodies of all types and abilities are welcome. No prior experience required.
